Will Dune: Prophecy Return for Season 2?

Days before Dune: Prophecy’s Season 1 finale aired, HBO confirmed that the show will be coming back for a second season, delighting fans who were hoping to see a little more Arrakis in the Dune television universe.

“Dune: Prophecy has captivated audiences around the globe thanks to the visionary leadership of showrunner and executive producer Alison Schapker, who will continue to guide this grand tale of truth and power,” Sarah Aubrey, head of Max original programming, said in a statement announcing the show’s renewal. “We are incredibly grateful to our partners at Legendary and to our extraordinary cast and crew for their service to the Imperium. Yes. HBO announced on Dec. 19, 2024, that the show will be coming back for a second season.

    Dune: Prophecy about?

No plot details have been released, but after the Season 1 finale, it seems probable that Season 2 will focus on Valya Harkonnen’s mission on Arrakis to discover who is responsible for implanting Desmond Hart with the nanomachine that allowed him to kill people. Desmond, meanwhile, is likely to become an even more dangerous foe now that he has unchecked authority over the Imperium’s military thanks to his alliance with Empress Natalya. And on Wallach IX, home of the Sisterhood, the acolytes will have to grapple with the news that Valya and Tula have been lying to them for years about the origins of their order.

    Dune: Prophecy?

No casting news has been confirmed yet, but it’s highly likely that most of the major players will return. Two actors who probably won’t be back are Mark Strong and Tabu, who played Emperor Javicco Corrino and Francesca, respectively, in Season 1. (Their characters both died in the season finale.) The possible cast includes:

    HBO

    Emily Watson (Valya Harkonnen)

Valya, Mother Superior of the Sisterhood, was last seen on Arrakis with Ynez and Keiran, searching for the source of Desmond’s nanomachine.

Olivia Williams as Reverend Mother Tula Harkonnen

    HBO

    Olivia Williams (Tula Harkonnen)

After admitting to her sister that her baby actually wasn’t stillborn, Tula tried to reconnect with her long-lost son, Desmond, who immediately had her imprisoned.

Travis Fimmel in Dune: Prophecy Episode 4

    HBO

    Travis Fimmel (Desmond Hart)

The emperor is dead, but Desmond is now the Bashar (i.e. the leader of the Sardaukar army), so he has pretty unlimited authority over the Imperium’s military—and it helps that he’s Empress Natalya’s right-hand man.

Jodhi May as Empress Natalya Arat in Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Jodhi May (Empress Natalya)

The newly single empress is almost certainly going to try to take the throne of the Imperium, which shouldn’t be too difficult now that she has her own one-man virus spreader who’s also invested in ending the Sisterhood once and for all.

    Chloe Lea on Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Chloe Lea (Lila)

Lila is getting a second chance at life after her difficult experience with the Agony, but her mind has been taken over by her ancestors—including Dorotea, who’s determined to get her revenge on Valya from beyond the grave.

Sarah Sofie Boussnina as Princess Ynez Corrino in Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Sarah-Sofie Boussnina (Princess Ynez)

After Valya’s rescue, Ynez is on Arrakis, helping the Mother Superior search for the enemy who’s trying to destroy the Sisterhood.

    Chris Mason on Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Chris Mason (Keiran Atreides)

Keiran caught a ride with Valya and Ynez, the latter of whom refused to leave Salusa Secundus without her on-and-off lover in tow.

    Edward Davis on Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Edward Davis (Harrow Harkonnen)

Valya’s nephew, who’s now in possession of proof that his aunt was behind the plot to kill the emperor, is either fully in the pocket of Desmond or ready to use his footage to get in good with the Landsraad.

Josh Heuston as Constantine Corrino in Dune: Prophecy

    HBO

    Josh Heuston (Constantine Corrino)

Javicco’s illegitimate son, Constantine, didn’t appear in the season finale, as he was in space undertaking his new job as commander of the emperor’s fleet.

Several of the Sisterhood’s acolytes could also be back, including Sister Jen (Faoileann Cunningham), Sister Emeline (Aoife Hinds), Sister Theodosia (Jade Anouka) and Sister Avila (Barbara Marten).

HBO hasn’t announced a release date for Season 2, but given the time it took to produce Season 1, the new episodes aren’t likely to arrive until 2026 at the earliest.

    Dune: Prophecy

Season 2 of Dune: Prophecy will eventually air on HBO and stream on Max.

The second season hasn’t started filming yet, so HBO hasn’t dropped a trailer, but watch this space for updates.

    Dune: Prophecy?

This is one of the biggest questions about Season 2 given that Season 1 only had six episodes, and fans are hoping for more. HBO hasn’t shared a number, but assume that it will be at least six.

    Dune: Prophecy based on?

The first show’s first season was loosely based on the 2012 novel Sisterhood of Dune by Brian Herbert and Kevin J. Anderson, which is about the founding of the order that eventually becomes the Bene Gesserit of the films. It’s not yet known which book will serve as the basis for Season 2—there are 23 of them—but there’s still plenty of story left in Sisterhood of Dune that hasn’t been told.
