Chicago Cubs Sign Catcher Carlos Perez

The Chicago Cubs have signed a Triple-A depth catcher to replace Matt Thaiss, who was traded to the White Sox. Per the team’s transactions log, the Cubs signed Carlos Perez to a minor league deal.

Perez, 34, has appeared in parts of five big league seasons, though he spent all of 2024 playing at Triple-A in the Athletics’ system (hitting .260/.344/.544/114 wRC+). His metrics in the big leagues are that of an average catcher, and his career spanning 16 years and 8 different organizations suggests that he’s probably pretty good at working with a pitching staff. A good guy to have in the organization.

That said, it’s possible we never see Perez. The Cubs figure to have Pablo Aliendo and Moises Ballesteros also catching at Iowa, and if a need pops up on the big league roster, it’s conceivable one of the younger guys would get the call, depending on circumstances. You have to have a veteran catcher at Triple-A, though, just in case emergency strikes. Hopefully Miguel Amaya and Carson Kelly stay healthy, and if not, hopefully Aliendo shows he’s ready to audition as a future big league back-up or Ballesteros shows he’s ready to handle big league pitchers behind the plate. If not, then you’re happy to have Perez in your back pocket.

Fun fact discovered when trying to pull up the stats for Carlos Perez: there’s another Carlos Perez who is also a Triple-A/MLB borderline depth catcher. And that Carlos Perez is actually the brother of Carlos Perez.
