Former LSU running back Clyde Edwards-Helaire didn’t have to wait long to find a new team after being let go by the Kansas City Chiefs. The former LSU Tiger was waived on Monday and on Wednesday, signed to the New Orleans Saints’ practice squad.
It’s a homecoming for Edwards-Helaire who was born and raised in Baton Rouge, LA.

— New Orleans Saints (@Saints) December 18, 2024Edwards-Helaire starred for LSU from 2017-19. The RB was a key member of the 2019 champion team, rushing for 1,414 yards and 16 TDs in that season. Overall, the RB racked up 2,103 rushing yards, 595 receiving yards, and 24 total TDs in Baton Rouge.
The RB was drafted by the Chiefs in the 1st round of the 2020 NFL Draft. Edwards-Helaire immediately became a focal point of the team’s offense, rushing for 803 yards and catching 36 passes for 297 yards as a rookie.
Since that season, however, the RB’s numbers have gone down each season. Injuries and inconsistency led to Edwards-Helaire losing his starting job to Isiah Pacheco. Other matters kept the RB out of action in 2024. Meanwhile, the Chiefs received steady contributions from Kareem Hunt and others.
Now, the Louisiana native will return home and hope to restart his career. The Saints have Alvin Kamara but not much else in terms of RB depth. Kamara has 950 yards while no other RB on the team has more than 130.
It will be interesting to see if the 5-9 Saints call upon Edwards-Helaire during the final run of the regular season.
