One Projection Thinks the Cubs Will Be Awesome, Old Friend Signing, Rays Stadium, Scout Honor, and Other Cubs Bullets

ARRRRGGGGGGHHH. Our oldest made a bunch of macarons, which were freaking awesome, and the doggo found the rest of them and ate them all. It’s our fault, of course, but they were covered in the same way they had been previously, with no issues. Gonna be scooping teal poop all week.

It’s just a sneak peek for now, and we’ll break it down more fully when the projections come out, but … holy freaking crap ZiPS thinks the Cubs are awesome (it originally had an oops at DH, so that’s what Dan is referencing):

    — Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) December 18, 2024 I’ll take Dan at his caveat on the health side of things, and those adjustments will chop off some WAR unless the Cubs’ bench gets a lot better. But still. Holy crap, man. That is what the WAR projections look like for a GREAT team. Not even just a good team. A GREAT team. If the Cubs’ internal models are at all similar on this team, then you can even better understand why the front office is aggressively pushing in for 2025 (and why they ABSOLUTELY MUST add another quality starting pitcher and sure-fire reliever). Again, we’ll discuss more when the ZiPS fully come out and we can evaluate each of the player projections to see if there are hidden warts. But for today, that’s the loudest optimism scream ever from a dispassionate machine. Also, in case you were curious, this is what we’ve been saying about Cody Bellinger and Yankee Stadium all offseason:

ZiPS likes Bellinger a lot less, at 2.2 WAR as a Cub. ZiPS thinks he's particularly well suited for Yankee Stadium, and bumps him to 2.6 there. t.co/cSBEz0Y65T

    — Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) December 18, 2024 Bellinger getting traded to the Yankees ahead of another possible opt-out at age 30 is probably his best-case scenario. I’m not saying this is what drives the front office in their trades, but it is yet another example of them sending a guy to a very good situation (remember that whole thing at the 2021 deadline? where every guy went to pretty much their softest possible landing spot?) Random bit on that trade, by the way:

    — Sarah Langs (@SlangsOnSports) December 18, 2024 Oh, and one more on a previous trade and the idea of a better spot for the player:

    — Dan Szymborski (@DSzymborski) December 18, 2024 Former Cubs reliever Colten Brewer is reportedly signing a minor league deal with the Yankees. Brewer, 32, was one of the Cubs’ flyer moves last year as they built out their bullpen depth, and it was looking like a reclamation win for the first 15.2 innings (3.45 ERA, 2.97 FIP). But then a few implosion outings and a punched wall later, his numbers cratered, and his season was over. A very nice honor out in Southern California:

    — PBSSC (@socalscouts) December 16, 2024 The county commissioners in Tampa voted to approve a little over $300 million in bond funding for the new Rays stadium project, but the Rays are still beefing about the delays in that approval, and saying it pushed their stadium opening timeline an extra year and increase the cost of the ~$1.3 billion project. They don’t want to absorb those increased costs alone, so I don’t know that getting over this approval hurdle necessarily fully closes this matter. Stack that against the damage at the Trop, which will have the Rays playing at the Yankees’ Spring Training facility this season, and you still have more financial issues to sort through on the repair front for the next four years. Zach LaVine drawing “significant” trade interest? Surprising, but interesting. The Nate Davis debacle kicked off a whole lot of subsequent problems for the Bears. A little Blackhawks trade talk. And Connor Bedard at 100 games:
