Finn Cohen of Carpenter/Cohen stopped by Live & Local this week, following the release of the band’s self-titled debut album and ahead of their upcoming show at Cats Cradle Back Room this Saturday, December 21.

As the name suggests, Carpenter/Cohen is a duo: Cohen is based in Raleigh, and bandmate Josh Carpenter is based in Marshall. But while this is their first album as a duo, Cohen says they’ve known each other, and played together, for 20 years.
“I was in a band called The Nein, and he was in a band called Piedmont Charisma,” Cohen says. “I just knew him as a phenomenal drummer. And when our bassist moved to Portland, we asked Josh if he was interested in learning to play bass – and it turned out that that was his first instrument. And we quickly realized that he was not only a great drummer and bass player, but could play any instrument better than anyone else in the band.”
Cohen and Carpenter went in different directions in subsequent years – Cohen moved to New York, while Carpenter spent time touring with Rodriguez – but two years ago, with both men back in North Carolina, they decided to follow through on a years-old plan to write and record together.
“We recorded at a friend’s house in Boone for one session, and then we recorded at a friend’s house in Raleigh for another session – and every few months we would get together and hack away,” Cohen says of the process. “He’s a person who I’ve always jelled with personally and musically, (and he) challenged me on this record to try different things, to think about lyrics much more than I ever had before…
“And I always find that to be a better dynamic, when the person you’re playing music with (is someone) you’re intimidated by.”

Now that the album’s out, Carpenter and Cohen will celebrate with a show – complete with backup band – at Cats Cradle Back Room on Saturday, December 21, along with John Howie Jr. and the Rosewood Bluff.

And the duo may be just getting started: Cohen says they already have songs written for their second album, with plans to start recording it this spring.
Finn Cohen stopped by Live & Local this week to discuss the album and Saturday’s show, and to play three tracks: “Flying Fish,” “Barstool Variations,” and “Serpent Season.” Listen:
