Yellow labs are what Kerry Cooke thinks of when she needs a reminder of why she’s pursuing her business.

Undergoing a murder trial with the help of a yellow lab therapy dog, owning the breed herself, and then using one as a model on Amazon Prime‘s new television show “Buy It Now,” were signs to her that what she’s doing is special.

Carlsbad entrepreneur Cooke and her daughter, Katherine, created a pet product called “Spleash,” a leash handle and water dispenser through their family business, TailChasers. With it, they were the winners on a new show from Amazon that gives business owners the opportunity to be featured in the “Buy It Now” store.

Their win was announced on Dec. 11 on episode 12 of Amazon’s show, when they took home $20,000 and a spot in the store. The prize money went toward inventory, Cooke said.

“To get the money and Amazon Prime reach for a small puppy stage company like ours is a massive bonus,” Cooke said. “It’s like a lightning striking because you don’t typically get that kind of exposure when you’re that small.”

The product appears as a typical dog leash, but it flips open for a drinking cup, avoiding having to carry extra water when on a walk, hike, or run. It sprays liquid up to 14 feet for cooling, playing, or cleaning paws and it can attach to any leash — nylon, leather, or rope.

What drives this beginner company is the message that dogs can help people through hardship, Cooke said.

When Katherine was 11 years old, she and Cooke were involved in a murder trial — and a yellow lab therapy dog helped them get through it.

Having owned a yellow lab during that time, and then seeing one come out to be their model while pitching on the show was the reminder the duo needed.

“It was a beautiful, sort of poignant moment for both of us when we saw the dog, and it just made us both remember exactly why we’re doing all this,” Cooke said.

TailChasers then teamed up with Pet Partners, a pet therapy organization.

The idea of Spleash came to Cooke in late 2018 when she was on a walk with her lab-weimaraner mix in the “hot California sun,” according to the Spleash website. She wanted a way to make her walks more enjoyable without having to carry water with her.

Cooke, a biotech business development, sales and marketing professional with experience in genetic testing collaborates with her daughter, Katherine, a San Diego State University alum.

“She is just a creative force,” Cooke said about Katherine, who graduated in 2019. “She’s an amazing artist, writer, sculptor, painter. She’s just incredibly talented. It’s just been so much fun to work with her.”

Katherine does the in-house copyediting, designed the company’s logo and brand, and created all graphics, according to Cooke.

The company officially launched in March 2019, and the goal is to continue marketing products, Cooke said. She currently has several more ideas for future products.
