Engineering contracts awarded for UK’s first floating wind farm
The developers of the 560MW “Green Volt” floating wind farm in the UK has awarded front-end engineering and design contracts to two engineering consortia.

One went to a team of Norway’s Aker Solutions and Swedish-Swiss engineer ABB; the other went to Norway’s Aibel and Hitachi energy.

Located 80km off the coast of Peterhead in northeast Scotland, the project aims to be the first commercial-scale floating wind farm in Europe.

It’s being developed by Norwegian wind company Vårgrønn and Aberdeen-based Flotation Energy.

When fully operational in 2029, the project is expected to supply 1.5 TWh of renewable power to the grid annually, enough to supply approximately 555,000 homes a year.

Matthew Green, project director at Flotation Energy, called the awards a “significant milestone”.

“We are thrilled to be collaborating with these engineering teams as we continue to develop the wind farm at rapid pace,” he said.
