A small procedural move for the Chicago Cubs, with many more on the way. The Cubs have outrighted catcher Caleb Knight off of the 40-man roster, and he will now be eligible for free agency if he wants to go that route. Knight, 28, has been a floating depth catcher for the Cubs in the upper minors the last few seasons. It’s a thankless but important role, and is sometimes a precursor to a coaching career in the sport. We’ll see where things go for Knight from here, but it was a classy move of the Cubs to get him some time on the 40-man roster at the close of the season.
