Biltmore Estate will reopen in November after Helenes closure and furloughs

The Biltmore Estate, a prominent tourist destination in Asheville, North Carolina, is set to reopen on November 2nd following its closure due to the extensive damage caused by Tropical Storm Helene. The storm, which struck in late September, inflicted significant harm to the estate’s forested areas and some buildings while leaving attractions like the winery and gardens relatively unscathed. This reopening marks a crucial step towards recovery for both the estate and the local community that heavily depends on tourism revenue.

One of the largest and most historic attractions in Asheville, North Carolina is marking a milestone in the aftermath of Hurricane Helene. The Biltmore estate has been closed since Helene battered the western Carolinas as a tropical storm. Now the 8,000 acre estate has announced when it will be ready to welcome back guests, even though getting there may not be easy. Watch this video for the latest.

The Citizen Times previously reported that portions of Biltmore's grounds and some of its buildings suffered significant flood damage from Helene. Biltmore House, the Conservatory, winery, gardens and the estate's hotels received minimal or no damage from the storm.

In an Oct. 4 release, the Biltmore Estate shared details on the damages the property suffered during Helene. The release said though the estate saw several areas of damage, the forested areas of the 8,000-acre property suffered the most extensive damage, as "wind damage was extensive to grounds and some structures."

In addition to physical restoration efforts, the Biltmore Estate's management has also addressed workforce challenges resulting from the storm. Several employees were furloughed as a direct consequence of declining visitor numbers during this period. However, these furloughs are temporary; staff will gradually return to work as operations resume. This phased approach reflects not only an effort to stabilize employment but also an acknowledgment of the estate's role as one of Buncombe County's largest employers.

The anticipation surrounding the reopening underscores Biltmore’s commitment to serving as a beacon of hope for both tourists and residents during this challenging recovery phase. As essential services such as power and water are being restored across affected regions (Anonymous, 2024), Biltmore aims to contribute positively by welcoming visitors back just in time for the holiday season. This proactive response not only enhances local morale but also reinforces tourism’s vital economic role in sustaining community resilience.
