The FIFA World Cup 2026 qualifiers have seen Brazil asserting its dominance, exemplified by their emphatic 4-0 victory over Peru at the Arena BRB Mane Garrincha in Brasilia. This match, held on October 15, 2024, showcased Brazil's superior skill and strategic prowess as they controlled possession and effectively dismantled the Peruvian defense . Raphinha emerged as a standout player, scoring two penalties that underscored his composure under pressure. His contributions were complemented by goals from Luiz Henrique and Andreas Pereira in the latter stages of the match.
It was a testy contest for long periods, Peru doing their best to end Brazil attacks before they started - with tackles aplenty from both sides. Raphinha opened the scoring shortly before half time, converting from the spot after a lengthy VAR check determined that a Peru defender had handled the ball in the box. Rodrygo could have made it two after 43 minutes, but his chip was easily cradled by the goalkeeper.
The Barcelona man added a second from the spot early in the second half - this time from a far less controversial penalty shout.
Andreas Pereira gave the Selecao daylight, though, with a fine flying volley, guiding Luiz Henrique's cross into the bottom corner. Henrique grabbed one of his own soon after, strolling into the space afforded him by an open Peru backline - before stroking the ball into the bottom corner. Things aren't perfect for Dorival - there are still issues aplenty. But back-to-back wins will at least ease pressure, albeit momentarily.
Prior to the win over Chile, Brazil had lost four of five qualifiers and Dorival said there was still a lot of work to do.
"We have to realise that this is a group in the making and that it needs adjustments," he told reporters. "The team will still fluctuate. We'll have better matches than this. But because of the attitude we had, we didn't give our opponents a chance.
"We've got some tough games coming up and we need to be ready. I don't delude myself with any situation, just as I didn't despair when the disputes were rife."
The one-sided nature of the contest highlighted Brazil's tactical superiority. While Brazil created numerous scoring opportunities throughout the game, Peru struggled to mount any significant offensive threat . This defeat has implications for Peru's qualifying ambitions as they failed to capitalize on potential chances. In contrast, this victory solidified Brazil’s position in fourth place within the standings and secured a promising path toward qualification for the upcoming World Cup .
