NDP wins Winnipeg by-election amid tight three-way race in Montreal.

The recent by-election in Winnipeg marked a significant victory for the New Democratic Party (NDP), amidst a highly competitive three-way race that also featured candidates from the Liberal and Conservative parties. This electoral outcome highlights the shifting political dynamics within urban Canadian constituencies, where voter preferences are increasingly fragmented. The NDP's success can be attributed to its focused campaign strategy, which resonated with constituents concerned about social equity and economic stability in the wake of ongoing global challenges.

With just over 98 per cent of polls reported in Monday’s byelection, NDP candidate Leila Dance holds a lead of more than 1,000 votes over the Conservatives and Colin Reynolds.

“I will fight for Elmwood-Transcona, I will fight for Canadians,” Dance told a packed Junction 59 Roadhouse on Regent Avenue, which served as her election night headquarters.

“I promise to make you all so proud of me and I will see you in Ottawa.”

The Liberals, represented by Ian MacIntyre, are a distant third with 1,293 votes.

The Liberals, who have not been historically competitive in the riding, were in a distant third with just 4.7 per cent of votes. The preliminary results show that to be a far cry from the 14.7 per cent it earned during the 2021 general election and comes at a time when Prime Minister Justin Trudeau’s decision to remain party leader is under scrutiny as his popularity sinks to new lows.

Monday’s results showed the Conservatives increased its percentage of the vote to almost 44 per cent, compared to the 28 per cent from the last election, where the COVID-19 pandemic dominated as an issue.

In a speech shortly after midnight, Dance, the leader of a local business improvement association who ran for the NDP, thanked both the federal party and the Manitoba NDP, whose brand is strong provincially under Premier Wab Kinew — a fact the federal party saw as a benefit to their chances.

Dance says voters have been speaking loud about what they want.

“The importance of the things the NDP stands for, making sure we have a good health-care system, making sure we have affordable groceries, making sure we have affordable living,” Dance said. “I’m super excited the voters here aligned with my values and what I want to do.”
