New COVID vaccine booster shots starting to roll out to pharmacies across the nation

New COVID-19 vaccine booster shots across pharmacies nationwide marks a significant development in the ongoing public health response to the pandemic. As variants of the virus continue to emerge, vaccination remains a critical tool in mitigating severe illness and hospitalization. The introduction of updated boosters aims to enhance immunity among populations, particularly as data suggests waning efficacy of earlier vaccines over time. This initiative not only underscores the importance of vaccination but also reflects an adaptive public health strategy responsive to evolving epidemiological trends.

Pharmacies play a pivotal role in this distribution effort due to their accessibility and established infrastructure for immunization services. By leveraging existing networks, health authorities can ensure that booster shots are readily available to diverse communities, thereby increasing vaccination rates and promoting herd immunity. Furthermore, the convenience offered by pharmacies may encourage individuals who have been hesitant about receiving vaccinations to reconsider their stance, ultimately leading to increased participation in public health initiatives.

It’s that time of the year again. A new round of Covid shots is on its way to Americans.

The Food and Drug Administration last week approved updated mRNA-based vaccines from Pfizer and Moderna amid a relatively large summer surge of the virus. Here’s what you need to know, including how the shots are different this time around, who is eligible, where to get a vaccine and more.

In the release Peter Marks, M.D., Ph.D., director of the FDA’s Center for Biologics Evaluation and Research, said that updated vaccines met the “rigorous, scientific standards for safety, effectiveness, and manufacturing quality.”

“The updated mRNA vaccines are manufactured using a similar process as previous formulas of these vaccines,” Amanda Hils, an FDA spokesperson told USA TODAY. “The benefits and risks of the mRNA COVID-19 vaccines are well understood as these vaccines have been administered to hundreds of millions of people in the U.S. and continue to outweigh their risks.”

Kroger COVID vaccine, flu and RSV shots

Kroger Health, the healthcare division of The Kroger Co., said the company's family of pharmacies and The Little Clinic locations are offering flu, COVID and RSV vaccines.

Customers may make an appointment or walk-in to receive their vaccines.

Kroger stores include Ralphs, Dillons, Smith's, King Soopers, Fry's, Harris Teeter and other brands.

    Publix COVID vaccine appointments

Publix says on its website that pharmacies are offering the COVID-19 vaccine for everyone 6 months and older but notes that "product selection may be location dependent."

Customers can book appointments online, in-store and walk-ins are also available, subject to availability.

Novavax has filed for authorization of a new protein-based shot targeting JN.1. The company said its vaccine should provide protection against descendants of that strain, such as KP.2.3, KP.3, KP.3.1.1 and LB.1.

In a statement last week, Novavax said it is working “productively” with the FDA as the agency completes its review. Novavax expects its shot to receive authorization in time for peak vaccination season in the U.S.
