Warning as thunderstorms move in across the UK this weekend

As the United Kingdom braces for an influx of thunderstorms this weekend, meteorological experts are issuing warnings to the public regarding potential hazards associated with severe weather conditions. Thunderstorms, characterized by their ability to produce lightning, heavy rainfall, and strong winds, pose significant risks not only to individuals but also to infrastructure and ecosystems. The forecast indicates that these storms may bring localized flooding and disruptions, necessitating a heightened awareness among residents in affected areas.

The anticipated thunderstorms are attributed to a combination of atmospheric instability and moisture-laden air masses moving across the region. These meteorological phenomena often lead to rapid changes in weather patterns, resulting in intense precipitation over short periods. Such conditions can overwhelm drainage systems and lead to surface water flooding, particularly in urban environments where impermeable surfaces hinder natural absorption processes. Consequently, local authorities are urged to prepare for emergency responses aimed at mitigating potential damage.

The Met Office issued a yellow warning of rain for the region, affecting areas including West Sussex, Hampshire, Dorset, Northamptonshire, Derbyshire, Leicestershire and said other areas of England could be hit by the thunderstorm.

Meteorologists said there was a "small chance of flooding and disruption from heavy showers and thunderstorms" on Sunday in a few places, including power cuts.

"There is a small chance that homes and businesses could be flooded quickly, with damage to some buildings from floodwater, lightning strikes, hail or strong winds," a Met Office spokesman said.

With high pressure moving away to the east through this weekend, our weather will continue to be more unsettled as we start next week, with spells of rain and showers in places and more cloudy conditions than of late.

Pinpointing exact locations of these showers is quite tricky, but it would be worth staying up-to-date with the latest forecast as it may change, BBC weather says.

Away from the heavy showers and thunderstorms there'll be some sunny spells.

Feeling very warm and humid for many but especially so in south-east England where temperatures could reach 29C on Sunday afternoon.

Elsewhere, temperatures will be more widely in the low to mid-20s Celsius.
