Zverev, Dimitrov reach R3 at US Open

Alexander Zverev and Grigor Dimitrov, two prominent figures in the professional tennis circuit, have successfully advanced to the third round of the US Open, demonstrating their formidable skills and competitive spirit. Zverev, a former world number four, has shown remarkable resilience and determination following his recovery from an injury that sidelined him for a significant portion of the previous season. His powerful serve and aggressive baseline play were on full display as he outmaneuvered his opponents in the initial rounds of this prestigious tournament.

Dimitrov, often referred to as "Baby Fed" due to his stylistic similarities to Roger Federer, also showcased his exceptional talent during the early stages of the US Open. Known for his elegant shot-making and strategic gameplay, Dimitrov's ability to adapt during matches has proven crucial. His performance not only highlights his technical prowess but also reflects a deeper understanding of match dynamics against various opponents.

The 2020 finalist claimed a 6-2 6-7(5) 6-3 6-2 victory in two hours and 53 minutes on Grandstand as he continued his search for a maiden Grand Slam title.

Zverev, who is the fourth seed at Flushing Meadows, struck 21 aces and converted six of his 16 break points to improve his record at major tournaments this season to 15-3.

At the tail end of the first set, Zverev finally broke serve for a second time and took the opener on the strength of a couple of 130mph serves, struck almost as though he were losing patience with his pesky opponent.

The second set unfolded in similar fashion, as Muller demonstrated no interest in going away, engaging in long rallies and forcing routine errors off the German’s racquet. The Frenchman stayed even with Zverev until the tiebreak, where Muller raced out to a 5-2 lead. Zverev, though, reeled off five consecutive points, including a beautiful backhand return that painted the line to allow him to eke out the second set.

The 22-year-old, who is competing in just his second tournament since suffering a back injury in Madrid in April, raised his aggression and heavy hitting to earn his first win from two-sets-to-love down. The Czech struck 67 winners, including 29 aces. Lehecka will next face sixth seed Andrey Rublev, who escaped Frenchman Arthur Rinderknech 4-6, 5-7, 6-1, 6-2, 6-2.

It was Rublev’s second victory from two-sets-to-love down, having done so in the first round of Roland Garros in 2020 against Sam Querrey.
