The 2024 Monterey Car Week served as a pivotal stage for the unveiling of the new Mercedes-Maybach SL Convertible, a vehicle that epitomizes opulence and performance while standing in stark contrast to the burgeoning trend of quiet luxury. As luxury brands increasingly gravitate towards understated aesthetics and minimalistic designs, the Mercedes-Maybach SL Convertible boldly asserts itself through its extravagant features and undeniable presence. This juxtaposition raises pertinent questions about consumer preferences in the evolving landscape of luxury automobiles.
At its core, the Mercedes-Maybach SL Convertible embodies a philosophy that celebrates excess without apology. With its striking exterior design characterized by flowing lines and an imposing grille, it serves as a statement piece rather than a mere mode of transportation. The vehicle's interior further amplifies this sentiment; adorned with premium materials such as supple leather and hand-finished wood accents, it beckons occupants to experience comfort at an unparalleled level. In doing so, it challenges the notion that true luxury must be subtle or subdued.
The Monogram Series will be offered in two variants, which comes down to two color choices, the Red Ambience or White Ambience. The former sports two-tone Obsidian Black Metallic over Manufaktur Garnet Red Metallic paint, while the latter gets the same black over Manufaktur Moonlight White Magno (matte) paint. The black is found only on the hood, and clear is mixed with the red for the base coat, then clear coated to give that color more depth.
Stepping inside, drivers are greeted by an interior that exudes luxury. The cabin is decked out in sustainably tanned, crystal white MANUFAKTUR Exclusive nappa leather, covering everything from the door panels to the center console and, of course, the brand’s signature comfort seats. The new floral upholstery design adds a fresh twist, while silver chrome trim and galvanized seat backrests provide a sleek contrast. Meanwhile, technology is woven throughout, with a fully digital instrument display and an adjustable center display that features Maybach-specific animations. Other unique touches include a Maybach-branded steering wheel, stainless-steel pedals, and custom door sill trims.
The seats were given additional padding to go along with their new Maybach sew pattern. The AMG SL63's nine-speed automatic and all-wheel drive system are retained. Not that we expect buyers to care, but the Maybach upgrades have added roughly 400 pounds to the 4300-pound standard SL63, according to Mercedes.
How convincing a transformation this turns out to be won't be known until we can slide behind the two-tone steering wheel and into the plush driver's seat about a year from now.
The 2026 Mercedes-Maybach SL 680 Monogram Series will arrive at US dealerships in the second half of 2025; pricing will be announced closer to then and should exceed the 2024 Mercedes-AMG SL 63, which starts at $187,000.
