The integration of the Presto card with Apple Wallet is a significant step forward in the realm of public transportation and contactless payment systems. This new functionality allows commuters to easily tap their iPhones on Presto terminals, streamlining the process of paying for transit services in Toronto and surrounding areas. The convenience and efficiency brought about by this development cannot be understated, as it eliminates the need for physical cards or cash transactions.
One of the key benefits of using Apple Wallet with Presto card is the added layer of security and privacy it offers to users. With biometric authentication such as Face ID or Touch ID, individuals can rest assured that their personal information and payment details are safeguarded against potential threats. This level of protection is crucial in today's digital age where cyber security is a top concern for consumers.
The feature will be available on both iPhones and Apple Watches.
Customers can add a new PRESTO card and add funds to it within the iPhone wallet app itself. If they already have a registered physical PRESTO card, it can be connected to an iPhone or Apple Watch via the PRESTO app.
An “express mode” feature will allows users to tap their phones or watches on transit without unlocking or waking the devices and they can still use it if the phone is in low power mode and needs recharging.
Funds can be added to the PRESTO card either directly in wallet or from the PRESTO app. Monthly passes can also be purchased in the PRESTO app and then added to the Apple wallet.
“PRESTO cards stored in Wallet are private and secure, and Apple never tracks users’ journeys,” an Apple statement shared with Now Toronto said.
The tech company says when customers add a PRESTO card to their Wallet, their card information is “encrypted and securely stored in the Secure Element, an industry-standard, certified chip designed to store the information safely on the device.”
Along with the new option to tap with PRESTO in Apple Wallet, customers can tap their credit or debit cards (physical or digital), other available digital PRESTO cards options, or their classic PRESTO cards to pay their fare.
“Taken together, this menu of new payment options marks a shift in PRESTO from a transit card to a passport for the region,” said Hancock.
Not only is it easier to travel across the region, but it’s also more affordable.
PRESTO is the engine of Ontario’s One Fare Program, which provides free transfers to riders connecting to and from GO Transit and local transit agencies in the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area.
