Actor George Clooney, known for his philanthropic efforts and political activism, has been a prominent supporter and fundraiser for Democratic candidate Joe Biden in the 2020 presidential race. However, his recent request for President Biden to withdraw from the race has stirred controversy and debate within the political sphere.
Clooney, a major Democratic fundraiser, issued his call in a guest essay in The New York Times as prominent Democrats continue to step forward to question Biden's ability to win re-election against former President Donald Trump following Biden's debate performance last month.
President Biden’s team reportedly clapped back at the iconic actor on Wednesday after Clooney’s scathing New York Times guest essay that pushed for the president to step down from his reelection campaign in the wake of serious widespread concerns about his mental fitness.
Clooney is friendly with Obama too, but he and Biden have stayed in touch over the years, and the strength of that relationship held even when Biden criticized the International Criminal Court’s May decision to issue an arrest warrant for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as a result of his actions in Gaza – which Clooney’s wife, international human rights lawyer Amal Clooney, had been a key part of crafting. Clooney called a
Clooney is also seen by many Democratic backers in Hollywood as a sort of compass given his engagement and activism. His standing with Biden until now helped rally wider donor and celebrity support, even among some who had never been big Biden fans and were not enthused about backing him long before the debate.
When he says he’s been part of these behind-closed-doors conversations that only the rich and powerful are privy to, we believe him. Clooney, who has interacted with Biden for years, tells us that he has seen for himself a clear difference in the president’s appearance and behavior, and not just at the debate but at fundraisers as well. Other people in the position to know such things haven’t gone on the record, but George Clooney, of all people, now has. Sure, he doesn’t have as much to lose as most people if Trump wins, because he can just retreat to his home in Lake Como, but that doesn’t mean it wasn’t a little brave for him to speak out this way. (Biden’s campaign, for its part, has responded by questioning George Clooney’s stamina: Multiple news outlets late on Wednesday reported some form of this quote, from a source familiar with the event planning of the recent Clooney–Biden fundraiser: “The president stayed for over three hours, while Clooney took a photo quickly and left.”)
Representatives for Clooney did not immediately return a message seeking comment on insight into his decision, when precisely he had made it or how recently he had spoken with Biden.
Biden has refused to end his reelection bid after his weak debate performance against presumptive Republican nominee Donald Trump on June 27.
