Argentina faced off against Canada in a highly anticipated soccer match, ultimately securing a 2-0 victory. The game showcased the skill and determination of both teams as they battled it out on the field.
Argentina dominated possession throughout the game, controlling the tempo and creating numerous scoring opportunities. Their strong offensive play allowed them to break through Canada's defense and score two impressive goals.
It wasn’t easy. The Argentines had to work, and think, and sweat here at MetLife Stadium on a steamy Tuesday night, in the first of two Copa semifinals. They had to stomach the occasional early scare.
But they brushed aside Canada, 2-0, to reach Sunday’s final. Their clincher was perhaps the most subtle, plain goal Lionel Messi will ever score, his first of the tournament. And their breakthrough, midway through the first half, was straightforward — literally.
Messi scored a quirky goal early in the second half, Julián Álvarez scored in the first half and Argentina defeated Canada, 2-0, on Tuesday night during their Copa America semifinal at MetLife Stadium in East Rutherford, New Jersey.
“It's crazy what this group did, what the Argentine national team has been doing,” Messi said after the game. “After this, much more importance will be given to all the finals that I and all of the old group had to play in.”
Canada star Alphonso Davies limped off in the 71st minute after his right leg was caught in a clean challenge with Gonzalo Montiel.
“He’s getting an X-ray, so we’re hopeful he’s OK, but we’re not sure,” Marsch said.
Canada had two shots on target: Jonathan David was thwarted by Emiliano Martínez from close range in first-half stoppage time, and Martínez made a kick save on Tani Oluwaseyi in the 89th.
In those 22 minutes, the underdogs were frisky. They detected openings. They sprung forward on the counter. They threatened.
But they didn't quite have the quality to pounce on opportunities. And once they conceded, they were toast.
Messi, with a classic feint and a right-footed shot, nearly buried the Reds right before halftime.
Canada made a valiant effort but struggled to match Argentina in intensity and skill. Despite their best efforts, they couldn't score and fell short in their quest for victory. The match displayed top-tier soccer talent, with both teams showcasing their skills. Argentina's 2-0 win confirmed their powerhouse status in international soccer, while Canada showed potential for future competitions.
