The Devil Wears Prada Sequel in Development at Disney, Aline Brosh McKenna in Discussions to Return as Screenwriter

The Devil Wears Prada, a beloved film based on Lauren Weisberger's novel of the same name, is reportedly getting a sequel in development at Disney. Aline Brosh McKenna, who wrote the screenplay for the original film, is currently in discussions to return as the screenwriter for this highly anticipated project.

Released in 2006, The Devil Wears Prada follows the story of Andy Sachs, a young aspiring journalist who lands a job as an assistant to Miranda Priestly, the powerful and demanding editor-in-chief of a prestigious fashion magazine. The film explores themes of ambition, success, and self-discovery against the backdrop of New York City's high fashion industry.

Disney is developing a sequel to the hit 2006 movie starring Meryl Streep as Miranda Priestly, the high-powered fashion magazine editor from hell (or, more accurately, the editor-in-chief of Runway magazine) with Anne Hathaway and Emily Blunt as her harried assistants Andrea Sachs and Emily Charlton.

In an interview with ENews, the actress expressed that the original movie did not require a sequel, preferring to leave the characters’ futures to viewers’ imaginations. Despite this, she shared her vision of Andy living in France, speaking fluent French, working for a fashion magazine, and possibly having children.

The plot for the sequel centres around Miranda Priestly facing challenges with the then-famous magazine “Runway” and needing assistance to regain its relevance. She must lower her ego and seek help from Emily Charlton, who has climbed the ranks to become the executive of the latest and most renowned magazine.

Based on the current plot details, while Meryl Streep and Emily Blunt are set to return for the sequel, there's no confirmation yet about Anne Hathaway reprising her role as Andrea Sachs, Miranda's former assistant who left her behind at the end of the original film.

Ten years after the release of her debut novel The Devil Wears Prada, Lauren Weisberger followed up with a sequel titled "Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns." This continuation explored the journey of Andy, played by Anne Hathaway in the film adaptation, as she transitioned to becoming the editor of a bridal magazine and navigated planning her own wedding.

Notably, two sequels to the original book have been released over the years: 2013's Revenge Wears Prada: The Devil Returns and 2018's When Life Gives you Lululemons. The former features Hathaway's character, Andy Sachs, as the editor of a new bridal magazine who remains traumatized by her experience working with Miranda.

Produced by 20th Century Fox, the film also starred Stanley Tucci. The sequel is being developed by Disney after its acquisition of 20th Century Fox in 2019. The film has also been adapted into a stage musical, with Vanessa Williams as Miranda Priestly and original music by Elton John.
