The entertainment industry mourns the loss of actor Doug Sheehan, known for his role as Joe Kelly on General Hospital. Sheehan, who passed away at 75, had a successful acting career spanning over four decades on stage and screen. His portrayal of Joe Kelly garnered a loyal fan base and critical acclaim, securing his spot in television history.

Douglas (Doug) Sheehan, who joined the cast of the long-running drama Knots Landing in 1983 as Ben Gibson has died. Sheehan passed away at his home in Big Horn, Wyoming on June 29. He was 75. No cause of death was announced.

Born on April 27, 1949 in Santa Monica, California, Sheehan bowed on television in guest spots on the dramas Charlie’s Angels and Kaz in 1979. His first major role was as Joe Kelly on the daytime soap opera General Hospital from 1979 to 1982. He earned a Daytime Emmy nominaton for Outstanding Actor in a Supporting Role in a Daytime Drama Series for his work.

    The actor, best known for his work on General Hospital and Knots Landing, died "peacefully at his home" in Big Horn, Wyoming, according to an announcement released by Kane Funeral Home.

    The announcement stated that Sheehan's wife, Cate Abert, was by his side when he died.

    Sheehan is best known for playing Joe Kelly on General Hospital from 1979 to 1982, appearing in over 200 episodes. Sheehan earned a Daytime Emmy Award nomination for his performance.

    The actor also racked up credits on shows like Cheers, MacGyver, and Columbo. He was also cast in a main role in the short-lived NBC series Day by Day, starring as a hapless stockbroker-turned-daycare-operator as part of a stacked ensemble that included pre-Seinfeld Julia Louis-Dreyfus and a young Thora Birch.

    In the 1990s, Sheehan turned to “TV dad” roles, portraying the fathers of Cher Horowitz and Sabrina Spellman on Clueless and Sabrina the Teenage Witch, respectively.

    Sheehan continued to act reguarly up until 2003, with his last known part being an appearance on the Jenny Garth-led sitcom What I Like About You. Soon after, he opted to leave the business, eventually settling in Big Horn, Wyoming, where he reportedly took to writing plays and running a theater company.

    Sheehan's death was mourned across social media. One user on X (formerly Twitter) wrote, "He hadn't been on #GH in 42 years, and the fans never forgot him and never stopped asking for his return. Not only is it impressive, but a testament to Doug Sheehan."
