Bery Update: Hurricane Beryl is sweeping by Jamaica and eyeing the Gulf of Mexico

Hurricane Beryl, a rapidly intensifying storm, is currently sweeping by Jamaica and eyeing the Gulf of Mexico. This powerful hurricane has the potential to cause significant damage and disrupt the lives of millions of people in its path. As a college student studying meteorology, it is crucial to closely monitor and analyze the behavior of this storm in order to better understand its impact on our environment.

The formation and movement of hurricanes such as Beryl are complex phenomena that require careful observation and analysis. By studying the atmospheric conditions that contribute to the development of hurricanes, scientists can improve their ability to predict and prepare for future storms. The data collected from Hurricane Beryl will be invaluable in refining our understanding of these natural disasters.

Hurricane Beryl was retreating from Jamaica late Wednesday and is expected to pass just south of the Cayman Islands overnight as a major hurricane, bringing intense winds and heavy rain, the National Hurricane Center said.

As of 11 p.m. ET on Wednesday, Beryl remained a Category 4 hurricane with winds of 130 mph and was about 160 miles southeast of Grand Cayman — the largest of the Cayman Islands. After roaring by Jamaica's southern coast, the hurricane was expected to unload "devastating hurricane-force winds, life-threatening storm surge, and damaging waves" across the Cayman Islands, according to the hurricane center.

U.S. Consular Agencies Cancun and Playa del Carmen will be closed Friday, July 5, 2024, due to Hurricane Beryl.  No passport or notarial services will be available. The agencies plan to reopen July 8, 2024.

Flights to and from airports in the impacted areas, inlcuding Cancun, Cozumel, Tulum, and Merida, may be delayed or canceled as the hurricane approaches. Ferries from Cozumel and other islands to the mainland many be canceled.

By 11 p.m., the hurricane’s center was about 160 miles southeast of Grand Cayman, and the storm was moving west-northwest at 21 mph, the national hurricane center said.

“The Cayman Islands are sort of next in line for seeing significant impacts,” National Hurricane Center Director Michael Brennan said in a video update Wednesday afternoon.

Storm surge there could raise water levels by as much as 2 to 4 feet above normal tide levels, and rainfall totals could range from 4 to 6 inches, the hurricane center said.

The storm is projected to be a hurricane as it crosses the Yucatán Peninsula on Friday, the agency said, and it will then move into the Gulf of Mexico and threaten Mexico or southern Texas
