It is with great sadness that the broadcasting community mourns the passing of former broadcaster Scott Boyd at the age of 68. Boyd was a beloved figure in the industry, known for his charismatic on-air presence and dedication to delivering quality programming to his audience.
Boyd began his career in radio at a young age, working his way up through the ranks to become a prominent voice in the industry. His passion for storytelling and connecting with listeners set him apart from others in the field, earning him a loyal following throughout his career.
Canada's first Black national news anchor, George Elroy Boyd, has died at age 68 at a hospice in Montreal.
Boyd, who was born in Halifax, was one of the original anchors on CBC Newsworld, a 24-hour news channel that launched in 1989.
"We've got it, it's there. The product is there and all we have to do now is work harder to better what we have now," Boyd said in a news piece on the glitchy launch of the channel that originally aired July 31, 1989.
Scotty started working in radio in the 70’s in Cape Breton, eventually landing on T.V. screens across the Maritimes as a host on ‘Breakfast Television’.
Rob MacNamara and Tashia Lee co-hosted a radio morning show with Scott in Cape Breton following his time on Breakfast Television.
“The one thing I remember about the three of us being together for the five or six years we were, was we laughed an awful lot,” said Lee.
“Scott would do anything for you, and he’s definitely going to be missed,” said MacNamara.
On 27 May 2014, he signed a new contract keeping him at Ross County for the 2014–15 season.
On 25 August 2015, Boyd became Ross County's record appearances holder since they joined the Scottish League, making his 288th appearance for the club in their 2–0 win against Ayr United in the Scottish League Cup.
On 31 August 2016, Boyd moved on a season-long loan to Kilmarnock. He then made the move permanent on 31 January 2017, signing until summer 2018. Boyd signed a new contract with Kilmarnock in March 2019, due to run until summer 2020.
He retired from playing in June 2019, returning to former club Ross County as sporting director.
Throughout his time on air, Boyd brought joy and entertainment to countless individuals, leaving a lasting impact on those who had the pleasure of listening to him. His legacy as a broadcaster will continue to inspire future generations of media professionals.
Although Boyd may no longer be with us, his spirit lives on through the memories he created and the lives he touched during his time behind the microphone. He will be deeply missed by all who knew him, but never forgotten.
