As Hurricane Beryl approaches Jamaica and the Cayman Islands as a Category 4 storm, residents and officials must take immediate action to prepare for the potential devastation that could result from this powerful natural disaster. The National Hurricane Center has not made any major changes to the forecast and that track remains well south of SWLA. However it is important to note that Beryl could end up closer to SWLA than currently indicated. Though the forecast remains VERY uncertain beyond Friday.
Hurricane Beryl has killed at least seven people: Three in Grenada, three in northern Venezuela and one in St Vincent and the Grenadines. One of the victims died in Grenada’s capital after a tree fell on their home, Mitchell said.
This evening, the Category 4 storm will bring up to three feet of storm surge to Hispaniola.
Hurricane Beryl will reach Jamaica, which is now under a Hurricane Warning, on Wednesday. Residents of the Cayman Islands are also bracing for Hurricane Beryl to hit on Thursday night. The storm will likely maintain strength as it travels.
Last month, the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) said there was an 85% chance that the Atlantic hurricane season will be above average in storm activity.
The National Hurricane Center is also watching an area of disorganized showers and thunderstorms about 1,000 miles east-southeast of the Windward Islands.
Forecasters said conditions are only marginally conducive for additional development as it moves across the central and western tropical Atlantic. It could bring heavy rainfall to the Lesser Antilles by midweek.
A hurricane watch was issued for the southern coast of Haiti on Tuesday with tropical storm conditions forecast for the country and the Dominican Republic. Officials urge anyone in the Cayman Islands, Belize, the Yucatan Peninsula and the Gulf to closely monitor Beryl's path.
