The highly anticipated Copa America 2024 match between Colombia and Costa Rica ended in a decisive 3-0 victory for the Colombian national team. The match, which took place at the Estadio Metropolitano Roberto Meléndez in Barranquilla, showcased Colombia's superior skill and teamwork on the field.
Colombia's dominance was evident from the start of the game, with early goals from star players like James Rodriguez and Radamel Falcao setting the tone for the rest of the match. The Colombian team's cohesive play and strategic tactics kept Costa Rica on the defensive throughout the game, preventing them from mounting any significant offensive threats.
Colombia has made a habit recently of scoring early in matches. Costa Rica survived nearly 20 shots vs Brazil without conceding. But the finishing of Colombia will be the difference here, especially if James Rodriguez continues to play and pass at the level he did against Paraguay.
Colombia has qualified for the Copa America quarterfinals with its 3-0 win over Costa Rica Friday at State Farm Stadium in Glendale. The South American team still has one match to play, against Brazil on Tuesday in Santa Clara, Calif.
Colombia has won 10 straight and is unbeaten in 25 games (20-0-5) since losing at Argentina in a World Cup qualifier in 2022. Costa Rica did not have a shot on goal.
“Today was a game we dominated from start to finish,” Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo said through an interpreter.
Cordoba rounded out the scoring three minutes later after timing his run perfectly to stay onside and latch onto James Rodríguez's long ball before calmly slotting his finish past Sequeira.
"Everything that was planned during the week was done and the truth is that I'm very happy to contribute to my team-mates, not just because of the goal," Cordoba said after the match.
The 31-year-old striker, who plays for FK Krasnodar, started in place of Rafael Santos Borre, who is nursing an ankle problem.
Despite Costa Rica’s recent defensive resilience, they have never kept consecutive clean sheets at the Copa America, highlighting the challenge they face.
If Colombia manages to breach Costa Rica’s defensive wall quickly, it could end up being a one-sided meeting.
