Pro surfer Tamayo Perry's tragic death in a shark attack off the coast of Hawaii serves as a stark reminder of the inherent dangers that come with participating in extreme water sports. Perry, known for his fearless approach to big wave surfing, was a well-respected figure in the surfing community and his untimely passing has sent shockwaves throughout the industry.
The incident highlights the unpredictable and often perilous nature of ocean activities, where surfers constantly face the risk of encountering dangerous marine predators. Despite precautions taken by experienced surfers like Perry, such as surfing in groups and avoiding areas known for shark activity, tragic accidents like this one can still occur.
Perry, 49, died after encountering a shark while surfing near Goat Island during a break from his lifeguard duties, Honolulu Emergency Services Department officials said. The attack occurred around midday, drawing a swift response from local authorities.
Perry initially made a name for himself in Hawaii and beyond in the early 2000s, when fellow athletes began to take note of his distinctive skills, particularly when it came to free surfing the North Shore pipeline, Surfer Magazine reported after his death. He went on to forge a career in Hollywood, making appearances in the film "Blue Crush" in 2002 and the fourth installment of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise in 2011. Perry also appeared in a 2011 episode of the TV series "Hawaii Five-O."
John Sullivan, an actor who worked with Perry on "Hawaii Five-O," called Perry the "nicest guy on Oahu."
"He broadcasted positivity wherever he went," Sullivan told CBS News on Monday.
Deadly shark attacks doubled in 2023 compared with the previous year, according to the International Shark Attack File, a database that keeps track of shark attacks reported around the world. One of the two fatal incidents reported in the U.S. last year happened in Hawaii, although shark attacks overall occurred most frequently in Florida.
Perry was an accomplished surfer, winning the Pipe Masters Trials in 1999 and was known for surfing Teahupoo in Tahiti, according to Surfline.
In addition to his professional surfing, Perry was an actor with roles in "Blue Crush," "Hawaii Five-O" and "The Pirates of the Caribbean," according to his IMBD profile.
Perry is survived by his wife, Emilia Perry, a professional bodyboarder and stuntperson. The couple ran a surfing school together in Oahu.
