To the Editor: In this era of global warming, political divisiveness and conflicting viewpoints, I’d like to bring things back down to daily life for a moment and hope you don’t consider this letter to be too superficial or petty. Prior to my retirement, I frequently shopped at J.C. Penny and the former Mervyn’s (now Kohl’s) for beautiful and reasonably-priced work clothes. Upon learning that J.C. Penny was closing on May 26, my friend and I went shopping to see if any bargains remained. It was disheartening to see the once thriving store essentially empty, but there was still bedding, some men’s and women’s clothes, shoes, empty display cases and bare mannequins lined up by one entrance.
