The devastating tornado that struck Greenfield, Iowa on April 9, 2020, resulted in multiple fatalities in southwest Iowa. The small town of Greenfield was hit by the powerful tornado, leaving a trail of destruction in its wake.
Several lives were lost as a result of the tornado, with many more individuals injured and homes destroyed. The community of Greenfield is left reeling from the tragic event, coming together to support one another during this difficult time.
Multiple people died Tuesday and at least a dozen were injured when a powerful tornado tore through a small Iowa town, carving a bleak landscape of destroyed homes and businesses, shredded trees, smashed cars, and widely strewn debris.
The tornado destroyed much of Greenfield, a town of about 2,000 around 55 miles (88.5 kilometers) southwest of Des Moines, during a day that saw multiple tornadoes, giant hail and heavy rain in several states.
The team at Adair County Memorial Hospital worked swiftly to assist the injured while also ensuring the safety of their facility, as it also sustained tornado damage. Due to the hospital damage, patients needing further treatment for injuries were transferred to nearby medical centers.
Additionally, the Greenfield Community School District coordinated the establishment of a reunification point at the local high school. This location will also serve as a temporary shelter for Greenfield residents in need tonight.
Sadly, we can confirm there were fatalities and injuries within the community of Greenfield from this tornado. We are still working to assess and update this information as it becomes available. A mandatory curfew of 10:00 p.m. is in effect tonight in Greenfield. The town will open back up at 7:00 a.m. Wednesday morning.

Greenfield is about 50 miles southwest of Des Moines and 75 miles east of Omaha.
The heat index - a measurement of how hot the body actually feels - will climb into the upper 90s in the afternoons and occasionally reach 100 degrees for much of the work week. Heat index values from 105 to 110 degrees are possible over the weekend.
Heat relief will finally arrive toward the end of the month.
