Dabney Coleman, a veteran actor known for his roles in popular films such as ‘Tootsie’ and television series like ‘Buffalo Bill’, passed away at the age of 92. His career spanned over five decades, during which he portrayed a wide range of characters with depth and nuance.

Coleman’s performances were marked by his ability to bring authenticity and complexity to his roles, whether he was playing a tough-talking boss or a lovable curmudgeon. His work in both comedy and drama showcased his versatility as an actor, earning him critical acclaim and a loyal fan base.

Born in 1932 in Austin, Texas, Coleman made early appearances in movies, including 1965's "The Slender Thread" and "Downhill Racer" in 1969.

    As a six-footer with an ample black mustache, Coleman made his mark in numerous popular films, including as a stressed-out computer scientist in "War Games," Tom Hanks' father in "You’ve Got Mail" and a fire-fighting official in "The Towering Inferno."

    "The great Dabney Coleman literally created, or defined, really — in a uniquely singular way — an archetype as a character actor. He was so good at what he did it’s hard to imagine movies and television of the last 40 years without him," Ben Stiller wrote on X.

    Mr Coleman won an Emmy Award and a Golden Globe for his TV appearances.

    More recently he appeared in the western drama Yellowstone, and had a recurring role as an influential businessman in the HBO gangster saga Boardwalk Empire.

    His daughter, singer Quincy Coleman, told The Hollywood Reporter: "My father crafted his time here on Earth with a curious mind, a generous heart and a soul on fire with passion, desire and humour that tickled the funny bone of humanity."

    "As he lived, he moved through this final act of his life with elegance, excellence and mastery," she said.

    Dabney Coleman — his real name — was born in 1932 in Austin, Texas After two years at the Virginia Military Academy, two at the University of Texas and two in the Army, he was a 26-year-old law student when he met another Austin native, Zachry Scott, who starred in "Mildred Pierce" and other films.

    Coleman married and divorced twice; first to Ann Courtney Harrell from 1957 to 1959, then to Jean Hale from 1961 to 1984. He is survived by his children, Meghan, Kelly, Randy and Quincy Coleman; and his grandchildren, Hale and Gabe Torrance, Luie Freundl and Kai and Coleman Biancaniello.

    In recent years, Coleman had a recurring role on the hit series ‘Yellowstone’, further solidifying his status as a beloved figure in the entertainment industry. His legacy will live on through the countless memorable characters he brought to life on screen.
