Moose Jaw Warriors get first WHL Championship in franchise history

The Moose Jaw Warriors made history by capturing their first WHL championship in franchise history. After years of hard work and dedication, the team finally achieved their ultimate goal of hoisting the Ed Chynoweth Cup. Led by a talented roster of players and a skilled coaching staff, the Warriors overcame adversity and tough competition to emerge victorious.

The road to the championship was not easy, as the team faced many challenges along the way. However, their perseverance and determination paid off in the end as they defeated their opponents with skill and precision. The city of Moose Jaw rallied behind their beloved team, showing unwavering support throughout the playoffs.

Coupled with an emtpy-netter, that gave Moose Jaw the 4-2 win, sweeping the Portland Winterhawks 4-0 in the WHL Final.

Moose Jaw had never won the Ed Chynoweth Cup. The last time the Warriors made the finals was the 2005-06 season when they were swept by the Vancouver Giants.

The Warriors got on the board first with a powerplay marker from Martin Rysavy who beat Winterhawks goalie Jan Spunar with a shot.

In the second period, Portland tied things up after Moose Jaw took a bench minor for too many men on the ice.

The Winterhawks made them pay with a powerplay goal from Kyle Chyzowski, who tipped a puck past Moose Jaw goaltender Jackson Unger.

Jan Spunar lost his third straight game after allowing four goals on 36 shots on Tuesday. He has a 12-5 playoff record with a 2.60 GAA and .915 save percentage.

The Warriors have the opportunity to lift the Ed Chynoweth Cup for the first time in franchise history on Wednesday. They last appeared in the WHL Championship series during the 2005-06 season but were swept by the Vancouver Giants.

Once the third period got underway it did not take long for the Winterhawks to get back on the board. Just under four minutes in, Portland’s Marcus Nguyen tied the game, 3-3. However, it was the lone goal of the third as this game would need overtime to determine the winner.

Just two minutes and twenty seconds into extra time Moose Jaw Warriors forward, Brayden Schuurman, was the hero as he was able to capitalize and lead his team to a 4-3 victory and 3-0 series lead.

“It was just a quick transition with my line. [Ethan] Semeniuk brought it down that right side. Made a nice play in the middle to [Rilen] Kovacevic and he got a quick shot on net. I think I happen to bat it out of the air and it went in the net. It was a pretty good feeling,” Schuurman described.

The Warriors will represent the WHL at the Memorial Cup set to be played May 24 to June 2 in Saginaw, Mich.
