President nearing the end, Jimmy Carter’s grandson

As President Jimmy Carter nears the end of his life, his grandson Jason Carter is poised to carry on his legacy. Jason, a successful lawyer and politician in his own right, has always looked up to his grandfather as a role model and mentor. He has learned valuable lessons from President Carter about humility, integrity, and service to others.

Jason has followed in his grandfather's footsteps by dedicating himself to public service and advocating for social justice issues. He has worked tirelessly to improve the lives of those less fortunate and uphold the values that President Carter held dear.

Jimmy Carter, who at 99 years old is the longest lived president, has been in hospice care since early 2023. Rosalynn Carter, his wife of 77 years, died in November.

Jason Carter said he believes his grandfather is nearing the end.

“There’s a part of this faith journey that is so important to him, and there’s a part of that faith journey that you only can live at the very end. And I think he has been there in that space,” Jason Carter said.

His grandfather’s time in hospice care has been a reminder of the work Rosalynn Carter did to advance caregiving and mental health, he said.

The former president announced in February 2023 that he had begun receiving hospice care, forgoing further medical intervention so he could spend time with family.

“The caregiving associated with mental health and mental illness is so crucial and so fundamental to the work that we all do in this room, and to her legacy,” Jason Carter said, referring to his grandmother. “It is remarkable and important, and we’ve all experienced it very firsthand over the last year, so we give thanks for that as well.”

The former president’s health has been the subject of widespread attention in recent years, especially since he entered hospice. Speaking with CBS in February, Jason Carter said his grandfather’s spirit was “as strong as ever.”

As we reflect on Carter's legacy, we are reminded of the importance of cherishing each moment and living a life filled with purpose and compassion. Our thoughts are with President Carter and his loved ones during this difficult time.
