OpenAI’s ChatGPT unveils ‘GPT-4o,’ Desktop App

OpenAI's ChatGPT has been making waves in the world of artificial intelligence, and its latest unveiling of 'GPT-4o' as a desktop app is no exception. This innovative technology allows users to interact with a highly advanced AI system right from their own computers, opening up a world of possibilities for communication and problem-solving.

The capabilities of GPT-4o are truly impressive, with the ability to understand and respond to natural language input in a way that mimics human conversation. This makes it an invaluable tool for tasks such as customer service, research assistance, and even just casual conversation.

OpenAI, which started the generative AI craze, today announced the new model (with "o" standing for omni), describing it as "a step towards much more natural human-computer interaction -- it accepts as input any combination of text, audio, and image and generates any combination of text, audio, and image outputs."

Rollout of the new tool started immediately, with OpenAI saying, "capabilities will be rolled out iteratively (with extended red team access starting today)."

Mira Murati, OpenAI’s chief technology officer and (very briefly) former CEO, during a video briefing said the company’s latest large language model, GPT-4o, would let developers and other users utilize real-time conversational speech, text, video, and audio. While use limits will still separate the company’s enterprise offerings, all users will have access to the new model’s capabilities, Murati said.

The updated technology and features are set to roll out to ChatGPT in the coming months. Free ChatGPT users will have a limited number of interactions with the new GPT-4o model before the tool automatically reverts to relying on the old GPT-3.5 model; paid users will have access to a greater number of messages with the latest model.

OpenAI said more than 100 million people already are using ChatGPT. But an updated ChatGPT experience — and the ability to interact with it on desktop and through improved voice conversations — could give even more people reason to use its technology. The moves comes at a time when integrations of AI into more widely-used consumer products by Google and Meta, like Instagram and Google Assistant, may make those companies’ technology more widely and easily accessible.

The new model will first roll out on Tuesday to customers of ChatGPT Plus and Team, and then to Enterprise later, a blog post on Monday said. It will also be available to free users of ChatGPT starting Monday, with usage limits. Users of ChatGPT Plus will have five times more message capacity than free users, and clients of ChatGPT Team and Enterprise will have even greater usage limits.

Murati concluded the livestreamed event by thanking Nvidia CEO Jensen Huang and his company for providing the necessary graphics processing units (GPUs) to power OpenAI’s technology.
