Bills trade: WR Stefon Diggs goes to Texans for 2025 draft pick

In a surprising move, the Buffalo Bills have traded star wide receiver Stefon Diggs to the Houston Texans in exchange for a 2025 draft pick. This trade has sent shockwaves through the NFL community, as Diggs was a key player in the Bills' offense and helped lead them to multiple playoff appearances.

Many fans are questioning the decision to trade away such a talented player, especially considering Diggs' chemistry with quarterback Josh Allen. However, it seems that the Bills are looking towards the future and are willing to part ways with Diggs in order to acquire more draft capital.

Following a 2020 trade from Minnesota, Diggs breached the 1,100-plus-yard receiving mark in each of his four seasons in Buffalo, including leading the NFL with 127 catches and 1,535 yards in his first season alongside Josh Allen.

"I can't begin to express the amount of love and respect I have for the city of Buffalo. Four of the best years of my life, the city welcomed me with open arms. I'm forever grateful for you all and the [Bills] organization!," Diggs wrote on Instagram Wednesday evening. "Something special was built over these years with some very special men, that will always have a place in my heart. Billsmafia, so many great memories created throughout the years. Those games were crazy because of you. Sadly good things come to an end until we meet again. 14."

Diggs ranked fourth in the NFL in receiving yards during that span and fourth in touchdowns, eclipsing 1,000+ yards and 8+ TDs in all four seasons in Buffalo. He set a career-high in single season receiving yards during the 2020 season (1,535 yards) and a career-high in single season TDs during the 2022 season (11).

Last season, Diggs had repeatedly publicly expressed a commitment to the Bills and a desire to retire with the team. The three-time captain signed a four-year, $104 million contract extension in April 2022.

The Bills will carry a dead money charge of $31.096 million next season after trading Diggs, according to Roster Management System. That will be the highest known dead money charge ever for a wide receiver in any season, according to ESPN Stats & Information research.

Too often, however, it was left to Diggs’ teammates coming to the receiver’s defense, as Von Miller did last year.

On Wednesday, Beane acknowledged Diggs’ competitive nature by saying “I wouldn’t want to change that for him,” before adding he took everything into account when making the trade.

“Certain things need to be kept in-house as far as how a decision was made or what all factors in specifically,” Beane said. “I think you just have to trust that this decision was made in the best interest of the Bills going forward.”
