Maggie Shealy, a graduate of East Chapel Hill High School now competing as a fencer for Brendeis University, won a national title in the women’s sabre event at the 2024 NCAA Fencing Championships on Friday. Shealy is first woman in the history of Brandeis to win an individual NCAA title, the 27th student-athlete overall to do so and the first to do so in fencing. Shealy is also just the second woman from an NCAA Division III school to win a title at the fencing championships. She entered Friday’s competition as the top-ranked fencer in the field after compiling a 12-3 record in the first three rounds of action. She defeated fencers from Columbia and St. John’s in the semifinals and finals.
