New Jersey first lady Tammy Murphy drops run for U.S. Senate

On a recent Tuesday morning, New Jersey First Lady Tammy Murphy announced that she would not be running for the U.S. Senate in the upcoming election. This decision came as a surprise to many, as Murphy had been rumored to be considering a bid for the seat currently held by Senator Cory Booker.

In her statement, Murphy cited family reasons for her decision, stating that she wanted to focus on supporting her husband, Governor Phil Murphy, and their four children. She also expressed her commitment to continuing her work on important issues such as maternal health and economic empowerment for women.

“After many busy, invigorating, and yes, challenging months, I am suspending my Senate campaign today,” she said in a video posted on X. “I have been genuine and factual throughout, but it is clear to me that continuing in this race will involve waging a very divisive and negative campaign, which I am not willing to do.”

“And with Donald Trump on the ballot and so much at stake for our nation, I will not in good conscience waste resources tearing down a fellow Democrat,” she added.

Murphy did not mention Kim at all in the more than three-minute video, which was posted Sunday afternoon.

In a statement, Kim called Murphy a "voice for progress and public service in our state" and said he respects her decision.

Kim called Murphy "a voice for progress and public service in our state" in a statement obtained by NBC News after Murphy's announcement.

"Tammy and I both agree that it is critical that we keep this seat, and the Senate, in Democratic control," Kim added. "Unity is vital. We will continue our efforts to strengthen our democracy in New Jersey while we come together to stand up against the dangerous agenda pushed by Trump.”

New Jersey's other seat in the Senate, held by Democrat Cory Booker, is not up for election this year.

With her race for Senate over, Murphy said she'll be using her time to focus on getting President Biden reelected and ensuring victories for Democrats in New Jersey, as Democrats across the U.S compete to maintain control of the Senate.

"With Donald Trump on the ballot and so much at stake for our nation, I will not, in good conscience, waste resources tearing down a fellow Democrat," she said.
