The discovery of Riley Strain's body in a Nashville river has sent shockwaves through the community. The young man, known for his charismatic personality and love for adventure, was found lifeless in the murky waters, leaving friends and family devastated.
Questions swirl around the circumstances of his death - was it an accident or something more sinister? As authorities investigate, memories of Riley flood back to those who knew him best. His infectious laughter, his unwavering loyalty, and his zest for life are now bittersweet reminders of what once was.
Strain’s body, found eight miles down river from where he was last seen, still had on the black and white shirt he was wearing when he went missing on March 8 after getting kicked out of Luke’s 32 Bridge in Downtown Nashville, according to Metro Nashville Police Department Chief John Drake. Authorities do not suspect foul play in his disappearance nor his death, Drake said just hours after the 22-year-old was found dead.
Metro Nashville Police Department Police Chief John Drake said Friday Strain’s body was found about 7:30 a.m. local time after it was spotted by a worker in the area.
“There is no other evidence to suggest anything other than” the young man falling into the river, Drake said.
University of Missouri President Mun Choi informed students and staff in a statement Friday that Strain’s body had been found. Counseling and supports services were available, he said.
The Cumberland River is a major waterway that runs over 680 miles through Kentucky and Tennessee. Multiple dams dot the river.
The Metropolitan Nashville Police Department has been working with the Cheatham County Sheriff's Office to conduct downriver operations. The United Cajun Navy, a volunteer disaster relief organization, has also participated in the search.
Strain was last seen on video around 9:52 p.m., briefly interacting with an officer who was responding to a vehicle burglary on a sidewalk adjacent to the Cumberland River on Gay Street.
In the video released on March 19, Strain appears to be walking normally as the officer asks how he is doing, to which Strain replies, "I'm good, how are you?"
