The Green Bay Packers made a surprising decision to release running back Aaron Jones, a key player in their offense for the past four seasons. Jones, known for his explosive speed and playmaking ability, was a fan favorite and a vital part of the team's success. His departure leaves a void in the Packers' backfield and raises questions about their future plans.
Jones' release comes as a shock to many fans and analysts, as he was coming off another productive season with over 1,000 rushing yards and 9 touchdowns. The decision to let him go signals a shift in the team's strategy or perhaps financial constraints that forced their hand.
The Green Bay Packers have released RB Aaron Jones. The transaction was announced Monday by General Manager Brian Gutekunst.
"We want to thank Aaron for his unwavering commitment to the Packers and the community over the past seven seasons," added Gutekunst. "It is certainly one of the hardest decisions we've had to make in my time with the Packers and not one taken lightly. He has not only had a significant impact on the field and in the locker room, but he is one of the most beloved players in the community. We wish nothing but the best for Aaron and his entire family moving forward."
Jones restructured his contract last offseason and took a pay cut from $16 million to $11 million. This time around, the two sides couldn't settle on a happy medium.
Jones carried a cap number of $17.6 million in 2024, a number the Packers weren’t going to pay even before they agreed to terms with Jacobs. If the Packers wait until the start of the new league year on Wednesday to release Jones, they will save $11.9 million against the cap this season.
Jacobs comes in on a similar four-year, $48 million deal. The 26-year-old comes to Green Bay with Raiders rushing numbers that total 5,545 yards and 46 touchdowns on the ground.
Through seven seasons, Jones amassed nearly 6,000 yards on the ground with 45 rushing touchdowns. He now has some soul searching to do as he looks for his next team.
Getting a running back you can count on each week is a tall order, and Jones certainly comes with his injury questions, but there is hardly a more gifted replacement.
