Google's latest animated doodle has caused quite a stir among coffee enthusiasts as it celebrates the popular flat white coffee. The doodle features a steaming cup of the creamy espresso-based drink, complete with swirling patterns and foam art
The flat white has gained popularity in recent years for its smooth texture and rich flavor, making it a favorite among coffee connoisseurs. Originally hailing from Australia and New Zealand, the flat white has now become a staple in cafes around the world.
A flat white is made up of an espresso shot topped with steamed milk and a thin layer of microform and is traditionally served in a ceramic cup. The milk is steamed, not frothed, to leave a smooth and velvety crema on top.
The preferred cup size for a flat white is a 160-165ml tulip cup, considerably smaller than the glasses typically utilised for lattes and cappuccinos.
This variance affects the coffee-to-milk ratio, subsequently influencing the flavour profile. Due to its compact nature, a flat white features a higher coffee-to-milk ratio than a latte. Consequently, the espresso in a flat white tends to have a stronger taste despite using the same quantity as in a latte. Lattes, on the other hand, dilute the espresso more.
According to Nescafe’s official website, a flat white is made of a thin layer of milk foam with most of its steamed milk within the drink, while a cup of cappuccino has foamed milk on top of the drink. “The ratio for cappuccino is a coffee-to-milk ratio of 1:2. Whereas the flat white is 2:3,” the website read.
This disparity in size affects the coffee-to-milk ratio, influencing the overall taste. Due to its more compact nature, a flat white has a much higher ratio of coffee to milk compared to a latte. Consequently, the espresso in a flat white coffee tastes stronger than in a latte, even though the same amount is used. Lattes, on the other hand, tend to dilute the espresso more.
As users clicked on the doodle, they were treated to a brief history of the flat white coffee and its cultural significance. From its humble beginnings in small cafes to becoming a staple in trendy coffee shops, the flat white has truly made its mark on the world of coffee culture.
In conclusion, this charming Google Doodle served as a reminder of the joy and comfort that a simple cup of coffee can bring to our daily lives. Cheers to the flat white!
