The world has lost a great soul with the passing of Eric Mays at the age of 65. Known for his kindness, generosity, and unwavering dedication to his community, Eric touched the lives of all who knew him. As a beloved father, husband, and friend, he will be deeply missed by those who were fortunate enough to have crossed paths with him.
Eric's legacy extends far beyond his years on this earth. His passion for helping others and making a difference in the world will continue to inspire those who follow in his footsteps. His impact on the community will be felt for generations to come.
Mays, 65, who was serving his third term on Flint’s city council representing the city’s 1st Ward, was known for his outgoing behavior and clashes with other city councilmembers.
Mays had garnered national attention, with videos of his antics going viral on many occasions and had helped him collect more than 200,000 followers on the social media platform TikTok.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley said Mays' "bold and courageous service" made him beloved among his constituents in the First Ward. Neeley said Mays' "strong presence" will be missed at City Hall.
"This is a tremendous loss for our community and a shock to all friends and family," Neeley said. "As our community grieves during this difficult time, on behalf of Councilman Mays' family, we ask that community members respect their privacy and allow them time and space to mourn. We continue to lift the family in prayer."
Last April, Mays was placed on six months’ probation for disorderly conduct during a city council meeting in 2022.
After the judge’s ruling, Mays remained unapologetic, referring to the sentence as a “slap on the wrist.” He made it clear the sentence would not change the way he interacted with his fellow councilmembers
“Will I flaunt it and put it in their face? No, but I will continue to follow the rules and try my best to hold these newly elected council people accountable,” Mays said last April.
Flint Mayor Sheldon Neeley, often a target of Mays’ criticism, called his death ”a tremendous loss.”
The flag at Flint City Hall will be lowered to half-staff in Mays’ honor beginning Monday.
