Shane Gillis, a comedian who was recently hired as a new cast member on Saturday Night Live, found himself at the center of controversy when racist and homophobic remarks from his past resurfaced. During his stand-up routine, Gillis used derogatory language towards Asian Americans and made offensive comments about the LGBTQ+ community. The backlash was swift and severe, with many calling for his immediate dismissal from the show.
In response to the public outcry, SNL made the decision to fire Gillis before he even had a chance to make his debut on the long-running sketch comedy series. The move was seen as a necessary step in holding individuals accountable for their harmful words and actions.
Gillis was fired from the show days after he was announced as a new cast member for Season 45 following resurfaced clips of him using anti-Asian slurs.
“Most of you probably have no idea who I am,” Gillis said in his monologue. “I was fired from this show a while ago. Don’t look that up. If you don’t know who I am, please don’t Google that. It’s fine, don’t even worry about it.”
It’s a classic DC lounge for politicians. Marco Rubio (Hernandez) is chatting with Tim Scott (Walker) and Lindsey Graham (Johnson) about their personal disdain for Donald Trump and misgivings over his control of the GOP — yet they have all endorsed him. “We all agree, Trump is great,” said Mikey Day.
Johnson’s Graham and Scott’s Walker remain funny — for different reasons. Two different style of impressions. Graham consoles Walker like we’re in Good Will Hunting: “It’s not your fault.”
Gillis also commented on his firing on social media: “It feels ridiculous for comedians to be making serious public statements but here we are. I’m a comedian who was funny enough to get SNL. That can’t be taken away. Of course I wanted an opportunity to prove myself at SNL, but I understand it would be too much of a distraction. I respect the decision they made. I’m honestly grateful for the opportunity. I was always a mad tv [sic] guy anyway.”
Since his firing in 2019, Gillis has co-hosted the popular podcast “Matt and Shane’s Secret Podcast” and landed a Netflix comedy special “Shane Gillis: Beautiful Dogs,” which was released in 2023.
