Thousands of users report issues in Microsoft Teams services

Microsoft Teams has become an essential tool for businesses and educational institutions worldwide, especially during the ongoing pandemic. However, recent reports of thousands of users experiencing issues with the service have raised concerns. It is crucial for Microsoft to address these problems promptly to maintain its reputation as a reliable and efficient platform.

Firstly, the widespread adoption of Microsoft Teams means that any disruption in its services can have severe consequences. Businesses rely on this platform for seamless communication and collaboration among their teams. Educational institutions heavily depend on it for remote learning, ensuring students receive quality education even from a distance. Therefore, any issues with Microsoft Teams can hinder productivity, disrupt workflows, and negatively impact learning outcomes.

The outage began Friday at around 11 a.m. Eastern Time, with reports of technical issues spiking in the afternoon and peaking shortly before 2 p.m. More than 14,500 service incidents were reported by then, outage tracker DownDetector's data shows. By 5:44 p.m., the number of reports fell to a little less than 1,100, according to the tracker.

Microsoft did not immediately respond to CBS MoneyWatch's request for comment.

The company said backup switchovers for North and South America were ongoing. Outage reports on DownDetector fell to almost half their peak level as of 3 p.m. EST but subsequently leveled off, indicating continued issues.

Teams is a messaging and videoconferencing app with over 320 million monthly average users as of September 2023.

The cause of the outage was not known but Microsoft was aware of the problem, responding to people who pointed out the outage on X, formerly Twitter.

"Hi there. We apologize for the inconvenience, our engineering team is aware and actively working to resolve this issue," Teams posted. "Additional updates can be found in the admin portal under TM710344."

No word on when the outage would be restored but Outlook works in the meantime.

Of course, some people also took the opportunity as a chance to end work a bit early for the weekend.

At 5:02 p.m. EST, Microsoft also acknowledged that “many customers remain impacted by this issue” but said the company is seeing “a reduction in errors and an increase in (service) availability.” The company has also said was working to address specific failures of Teams functions in parallel with its broader network efforts.

According to DownDetector, reported issues with Teams continued to decline and were close to normal levels as of 7:45 p.m. EST.
