Heavy damage, demolishes buildings tornado causes in Panama City Beach

On a fateful day in Panama City Beach, a devastating tornado wreaked havoc, leaving behind a trail of heavy damage and demolished buildings. The sheer force of nature's fury was unleashed upon this serene coastal town, shattering the tranquility that once enveloped its streets.

The tornado's destructive power was evident as it tore through the city, leaving no structure unscathed. Buildings that had stood tall for decades were reduced to mere rubble within minutes. The forceful winds ripped apart roofs, shattered windows, and collapsed walls with an unforgiving might. The once vibrant skyline now resembled a war zone, with debris scattered across the landscape.

The National Weather Service confirmed at least one tornado in Freeport, just over 30 miles away from Panama City Beach, and issued multiple tornado warnings on Tuesday.

One video caught by Patty Botts showed debris littered through the streets and a tall building tilted on its side.

“Literally, I was right there in the doorframe, you know, next thing I know, boom, roof goes off. The next thing you know, bam, walls out” a resident of FogCutter Apartment Complex said.

And the damages weren’t limited to homes and apartments. Landmark businesses like Shore Shake Pizza, Newby’s on the Curve the Thomas Drive Waffle and Omelet House were heavily damaged or completely destroyed.

Residents who have been living in the area for over 50 years say Tuesday’s storm ranks as one of the worst weather events they’ve ever seen.

“Micheal was the worst storm that I can remember. But as far as just a winter storm, this is right up there, you know, number one, number two. The devastation is phenomenal” Blanchard said.

The threat of severe weather continues throughout Tuesday morning. Please stay alert with updates from our team of meteorologists.

The tornado touched down in an unincorporated area of Panama City Beach known as Lower Grand Lagoon, which has a population of about 5,000 and is a popular tourist area known for water-based activities including boating, diving and fishing, according to the News Herald.

No injuries have been reported thus far.

A low-pressure system and cold front coming through the area has brought the winds, torrential rain, hail and tornados which began across the region Monday night and are continuing into Tuesday.
