The news of the untimely death of Mexican singer and actor Adan Canto at the age of 42 has left fans and the entertainment industry in shock. Known for his charismatic performances and soulful voice, Canto was a beloved figure in both Mexico and Hollywood.
Canto's career began in his native Mexico, where he quickly gained recognition for his powerful vocals and captivating stage presence. His ability to connect with audiences through his music made him a household name, earning him numerous awards and accolades. As he ventured into acting, Canto showcased his versatility by taking on diverse roles that showcased his talent as a performer.
Born in Ciudad Acuña, Coahuila, Mexico and raised in Texas, Canto began his career at age 16, when he left home for Mexico City to work as a singer-songwriter. He then began pursuing acting, making his TV debut on the 2009 Mexican series “Estado de Gracia.” His American debut came later, on Kevin Williamson’s 2013 Fox drama series “The Following,” which starred Kevin Bacon.
His notable roles include Vice President-elect Aaron Shore on “Designated Survivor,” Colombian politician Rodrigo Lara Bonilla on “Narcos,” and the mutant Sunspot in "X-Men: Days of Future Past." Canto starred in Halle Berry’s directorial debut, “Bruised,” as well as “Agent Game.”
Canto, who can be recognized for past TV roles on Designated Survivor and Narcos, played Arman Morales for two seasons on The Cleaning Lady. The Fox series is currently filming its third season. The Hollywood Reporter understands that Canto was not involved in the upcoming season due to his health.
In 2016, Canto joined Fox’s “Designated Survivor” as Vice President Aaron Shore alongside Kiefer Sutherland’s U.S. President Tom Kirkman. The actor also directed two short films, “Before Tomorrow” in 2014 and “The Shot” in 2020. His other film credits included “Amanda and Jack Go Glamping,” “2 Hearts,” “Bruised,” “The Devil Below” and “Agent Game.”
In features, Canto is probably best known for playing Sunspot in X-Men: Days of Future Past and also had major roles in 2 Hearts, Halle Berry’s directorial debut Bruised and Agent Game, among others.
An emerging filmmaker, Canto directed his first short film in 2014 and his second, a provocative Western starring Theo Rossi in 2020.
“Adan had a depth of spirit that few truly knew. Those who glimpsed it were changed forever,” Canto’s reps at UTA, Entertainment360 and Viewpoint said. “He will be greatly missed by so many.”
Canto leaves behind his wife, best friend and creative partner Stephanie Ann Canto, and their two young children, Roman Alder, 3½ years of age, and Eve Josephine, 1½.
