LSU QB Jayden Daniels wins 2023 Heisman Trophy from the Lincoln Center in New York

A tremendous season for Jayden Daniels has culminated in the sport’s greatest recognition, winning the 2023 Heisman Trophy from the Lincoln Center in New York Saturday evening.

Developing notably as both a passer and a rusher following an already outstanding 2022 campaign, Daniels ultimately totaled nearly 5,000 all-purpose yards and 50 touchdowns, outclassing his fellow Heisman finalists in both metrics. The California native would only grow after a season-opening setback to Florida State where, despite throwing for nearly 350 yards, Daniels dealt with uncharacteristic accuracy woes while his Tigers squandered an early lead to lose in blowout fashion.

Daniels wouldn’t throw double-digit interceptions the rest of the season while managing to surpass 350 all-purpose yards in all eight SEC conference games. Particularly impressive outings came in shootout affairs against Ole Miss and Florida — Daniels went 27/36 for 414 yards in a 55-49 heartbreaker from Oxford before later offering a possibly unrivaled dual threat performance, throwing for 372 yards and rushing for another 323 in a 52-35 romp over UF.

Daniels joined LSU after transferring from Arizona State University in 2022. He is the third player in school history to win the award and first since Joe Burrow in 2019

Daniels' time in Tempe featured some highs -- a freshman campaign that featured 2,943 yards and 17 touchdowns -- as well as some lows, including a 10-interception season in 2021.

Following the 2021 season at ASU, Jayden Daniels announced he would be transferring to LSU, who had just hired Brian Kelly as its head coach. During his first season as a Tiger, Daniels led LSU to nine wins and the SEC Championship game while throwing for 2,774 yards and running for 818 more.

But even with Daniels at the helm after making a substantial leap in his fifth year, LSU couldn't improve upon its 2022 season, once again winning nine regular-season games. This year, that was not good enough to make it to the conference championship.

Daniels and the Tigers finished their season against Texas A&M on rivalry weekend, with Nix, Penix and Harrison playing high-stakes games with playoff implications.

Daniels was the leader in the clubhouse on championship weekend as Nix and Penix squared off in the Pac-12 title game.

Both played well in a dramatic game that decided on playoff spot, but —- much like opposing defenses — neither could chase down Daniels.
