TIME Editor-in-Chief Sam Jacobs writes, "The [TIME Person of the Year] has typically been a ruler over traditional domains of power…very often a politician or a titan of industry…And yet the person whose singular influence was revealed throughout 2023 has held none of these roles—or anything remotely similar….much of what Swift accomplished in 2023 exists beyond measurement. She mapped her journey and shared the results with the world: She committed to validating the dreams, feelings, and experiences of people, especially women, who felt overlooked and regularly underestimated."
"But this year, something shifted," Lansky said. "To discuss her movements felt like discussing politics or the weather —a language spoken so widely it needed no context. She became the main character of the world."
Swift has been playing to massive crowds amid her ongoing Eras Tour, which continues next year with international dates in cities like Tokyo, Paris and London. One company estimated that the U.S. portion of the tour could generate nearly $5 billion in consumer spending.
“No one else on the planet today can move so many people so well,” Time said in its profile. “Achieving this feat is something we often chalk up to the alignments of planets and fates, but giving too much credit to the stars ignores her skill and her power.”
The magazine also interviewed Swift, with the artist revealing that “this is the proudest and happiest I’ve ever felt, and the most creatively fulfilled and free I’ve ever been.”
And yes, she even talked about her relationship with Kansas City Chiefs star Travis Kelce for the first time publicly. The pair started hanging out after Kelce wore a friendship bracelet on his podcast, which Swift said was “metal as hell” and started to hang out after.
As Swift's Eras Tour became a sensation, she also achieved billionaire status in 2023 owing to her successful concert tours as well as ticket sales. In late October the pop star re-released a recording of her album "1989" in the wake of her concert film's release, which pushed her past the billion-dollar threshold, Bloomberg reported at the time.
“While her popularity has grown across the decades, this is the year that Swift, 33, achieved a kind of nuclear fusion: shooting art and commerce together to release an energy of historic force,” Time said about her selection.
Her year included the wildly popular Eras Tour and concert movie, the release of her reimagined ‘1989’ album, and her closely watched relationship with Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce. She’s even the subject of college courses.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy was Time’s 2022 person of the year.
