Steeler loss to Cardinals 10-24, Kenny Pickett injury

Quarterback Kenny Pickett is expected to be sidelined "a couple weeks" with a right ankle injury he sustained Sunday in the loss to the Arizona Cardinals, a league source told ESPN's Adam Schefter.

With Pickett sidelined, backup quarterback Mitch Trubisky is expected to start Thursday against the New England Patriots.

"We'll roll with Mitch if [Pickett] can't play," coach Mike Tomlin said immediately after the loss.

Pickett sustained the injury midway through the second quarter of the Pittsburgh Steelers' 24-10 loss to the Arizona Cardinals and did not return.

Trubisky took over in his absence and finished the game 11-of-17 for 117 yards and a touchdown. He also lost a fumble.

Halftime at Acrisure Stadium was extended by more than 30 minutes after an initial round of heavy wind and rain swept through Pittsburgh. The second delay lasted nearly an hour and came with the Cardinals up 17-3 midway through the third quarter.

Pittsburgh treated the breaks as extended halftimes, with players trying to keep warm while the coaches tried to come up with adjustments on both sides of the ball

The Steelers (7-5) never recovered. All the progress shown by the offense a week earlier in a win over Cincinnati disappeared, and for once the defense couldn't come up with the game-changing plays that have become the unit's trademark.

Pittsburgh failed to produce a turnover and let all three Arizona drives that reached the red zone end with a touchdown.

Pickett was hurt late in the first half and wore a boot on his right foot while watching backup Mitch Trubisky, who struggled to do much of anything as the Steelers let a chance to strengthen their position in the AFC playoff race slip away.

“We got our (butts) kicked,” Steelers outside linebacker T.J. Watt said. “I don't know if it got away from us. We got pummeled today.”

To make matters worse, quarterback Kenny Pickett suffered an ankle injury late in the first half, while the Steelers also lost inside linebacker Elandon Roberts (groin) and guard Isaac Seumalo (shoulder) to injuries in this game. Safety Minkah Fitzpatrick, who was returning to the lineup after missing the past four games with a hamstring injury, also suffered a broken bone in his left hand in the second quarter, though he did not miss any time.
