Texans rookie quarterback C.J.Stroud won the first edition of the Ohio State air show Sunday at Paycor Stadium when his long-ball game bested Pro Bowl quarterback Joe Burrow and the Bengals, 30-27, on a last-play field goal.
Burrow hooked up with slot receiver Tyler Boyd for a 64-yard catch-and-run to give them a first down at the Texans 7 with 1:53 left. But after Burrow got sacked by the rampaging tackle Sheldon Rankins on first down, he threw a dime to Boyd over the middle on third down and Boyd dropped it. Evan McPherson then kicked a 31-yarder to tie it at 27 with 1:33 left.
They all hit, as the underdog Texans upset the Bengals. Singletary rushed for 150 yards and a touchdown, and Stroud completed 3 of 4 passes to get Houston into field goal position on the final drive.
The Texans won the coin toss and deferred. They kicked off to begin the game.
A roughing-the-passer call against defensive end Will Anderson, Jr. on the first play from scrimmage moved the ball to the Cincinnati 40-yard line. A short run followed, and then came an incompletion. On 3rd-and-8 at their own 42-yard line, quarterback Joe Burrow linked up with tight end Tanner Hudson for a pickup of 13 yards and a first down.
Two more passes to Hudson gained eight yards and one yard, and the Bengals were in a 3rd-and-1 situation at the Texans' 36-yard line. Linebacker Denzel Perryman and safety Jalen Pitre stonewalled a Joe Mixon run to the right side for a loss of two. The Bengals went for it on fourth down and got three yards on a pass to Hudson for a first down.
From the end of the first quarter to the beginning of the third, the Bengals punted five straight times.
"I felt like we just flipped in the second quarter," said Trenton Irwin, who caught one of Burrow's touchdown passes. "I don't know what happened."
Stroud became the fourth rookie in NFL history to compile at least 2,500 passing yards in his first nine starts. His 470 yards and five touchdowns in the win over Tampa Bay were rookie single-game records.
The Texans' one touchdown drive in the first half took just 3:03 and and was capped by a six-yarder from the connection that pulled off last week's stunner in Tampa Bay, Stroud to rookie wide receiver Tank Dell.
