2023 Election: Democrats win in Virginia

Nov. 7, 2023, was Election Day in at least 37 states, and Americans cast their votes on everything from governorships to local referenda. When the dust settled, it was a solid night for Democrats and their allies: According to ABC News projections, Democratic Gov. Andy Beshear won reelection in Kentucky, and Ohio voters passed Issue 1 to codify abortion rights in the state constitution. The AP also projected that Democrats won both chambers of the Virginia legislature and an open seat on the Pennsylvania Supreme Court. However, there were a few bright spots for Republicans: ABC News projected that Mississippi Gov. Tate Reeves beat back a strong challenge from Democrat Brandon Presley.

There’s lots of different information on the site. If you’re interested in a specific race, there’s a search bar just below the map where you can easily locate it. If you’d just like to see how your locality voted on all the races on your ballot, head to the map, or the dropdown menu just below, and click on the city or county where you live.

The results of some races will be tallied more quickly than others. And, with so many local races this year, registrars are warning voters not to expect them too quickly.

Democrats in Virginia took the House of Delegates majority back from Republicans Tuesday, dealing Gov. Glenn Youngkin a major setback.

Youngkin had rallied Republicans in the state behind a vision of a red Virginia and total Republican legislature. Democrats already put a stop to the governor's plans earlier on election night by holding their state Senate majority.

Democrat Schuyler VanValkenburg defeated Republican Siobhan Dunnavant

During a watch party at Rare Olde Times in Henrico, VanValkenburg took the stage to thank his supporters for their help on the campaign trail.

“We’ve been going around, talking about the issues that matter to people, talking about our values, talking about the things that matter to people and their families. Right, we were connecting with people all year and all year, it just felt like this we were going to win,” he said during his speech on Tuesday night.

VanValkenburg is projected to win his race against Dunnavant with 54 percent of the vote.
