Carson Wentz will get another shot to reignite his NFL career.
The Los Angeles Rams are expected to sign Wentz, pending a physical, NFL Network Insider Tom Pelissero reported Tuesday, per a source.
Aaron Wilson of KPRC 2 Houston first reported the news.
Rams quarterback Matthew Stafford missed the team's Week 9 loss in Green Bay due to a thumb injury. Backup Brett Rypien was ineffective in the defeat, throwing for 130 yards with an interception and a fumble. That performance apparently was enough to end Rypien's time in L.A. as Pelissero later reported that L.A. was waiving the veteran.
Wentz spent the 2022 season with the Washington Commanders, but was released in February with two years remaining on his contract.
Washington traded for Wentz, sending two third-round picks to the Colts in 2022, as well as swapping second-round picks with Indianapolis.
Wentz was drafted by the Philadelphia Eagles with the No. 2 pick in the 2016 draft, the same year the Rams traded up to the No. 1 pick to draft Jared Goff. Wentz was traded during the 2021 offseason after losing his starting job to Jalen Hurts.
The Rams tried to bring back John Wolford last week, but the Tampa Bay Buccaneers signed the Wake Forest product from the team's practice squad to the active roster.
Los Angeles drafted Georgia product Stetson Bennett in the fourth round of this year's draft as a potential developmental prospect, but he has been on the non-football injury report all season with an undisclosed issue.
Rams coach Sean McVay said Monday he is optimistic about Stafford playing in their next game against Seattle on Nov. 19, but the signing of Wentz indicates the Rams want insurance in case the injury lingers or Stafford gets hurt again.
Los Angeles attempted to make it through the season with Stafford and Rypien as the only quarterbacks on their roster. The Rams drafted Stetson Bennett in the fourth round last spring, but the two-time national champion at Georgia has been away from the team since the preseason for undisclosed reasons.
Before the 2022 season, he was dealt to the Commanders. He was 2-7 as the starter and passed for 11 touchdowns, with nine interceptions.
In this year’s draft, the Rams selected former Georgia quarterback Stetson Bennett in the fourth round to be Stafford’s backup.
But Bennett struggled at the end of the preseason, and he has not been with the team since being placed on the non-football injury reserve list for an unspecified issue.
