World Series Game 4: Rangers win over D-backs 11-7

The Texas Rangers are one win from their first World Series title.

Game 4 of the 2023 World Series featured the Rangers putting up 5-spots in the second and third innings en route to an 11-7 victory over the Arizona Diamondbacks.

Is Wednesday the day MLB crowns a new champion? Or will the Answerbacks, well, answer back? Here's how Game 4 went down, what it tells us about the series so far, and what it means going forward.

Jonah Heim added a home run in the eighth inning, and the D-backs clawed some late runs back thanks in large part to Lourdes Gurriel Jr.'s four-RBI performance, including an eighth-inning three-run home run.

Josh Jung also played offensive catalyst in addition to his usually stellar defense, getting three hits and scoring the game's first run on a wild pitch. Travis Jankowski also performed admirably in his first playoff start in García's place, with two runs, two hits and two RBIs.

Scherzer’s sudden departure after three innings Monday meant potential Game 4 starter Jon Gray had to go to work. So now it’s Andrew Heaney, who lasted just two-thirds of an inning in his prior start of the postseason against the Astros in the American League Championship Series, getting the nod for the Rangers. And the García injury in the midst of what has been an epic October for the Rangers’ right fielder (a single-postseason record 22 RBIs, eight homers and a 1.108 OPS) is a major subplot.

Pardon the phrasing that you’ll doubtless read about the game, given the night and the nature of the Rangers’ 11-7 win, but this was just scary bad baseball for much of the time.

This is where I’d usually say it was also terrible TV. I can only imagine that for most of the game, it was.

Mantiply, meanwhile, will be making his ninth postseason appearance for the Diamondbacks this year. He was used as an opener in Game 4 of the NLCS, working a scoreless inning against the Phillies, while his other seven games came in relief. Mantiply hasn’t allowed an earned run in seven of his eight playoff outings so far, but he’s never gotten more than four outs in any of them, so he’ll likely be out of this game very quickly.
