Cowboys vs. Chargers recap (20-17)

After a game filled with miscues and penalty flags, the Dallas Cowboys defense came up big in the final two minutes to seal a 20-17 win against the Los Angeles Chargers on "Monday Night Football."

With quarterback Justin Herbert playing through a fractured middle finger on his non-throwing hand, the Chargers dropped to 2-3 on the season as the Cowboys moved to 4-2.

The headline matchup between Dan Quinn's defense, one that desperately needed to bounce back after allowing 42 points to the San Francisco 49ers one week ago, and a Chargers' offense led by former Cowboys' offensive coordinator Kellen Moore.

There was also the question of if Dak Prescott and his offense could finally put explosive plays on film. It wasn't the prettiest of outings, but the explosive plays did arrive in spurts, and it helped the Cowboys to a fourth-quarter lead that was only undermined by a punt return fiasco that gave the Chargers the field position they needed to tie the game.

In the end, the following Cowboys got the job done, thanks in large part to these stars shining:Talk about being a man on a mission. Lamb was visibly frustrated following the embarrassing loss to the 49ers and promised "I'm fine", and that he was ready to play against the Chargers. He kept his word, in a major way, targeted five times in the first half alone, delivering five catches for 84 yards in the process. He would not be denied in LA, and Lamb was the biggest driver for the offense being able to move the ball down the field.

Monday night's game between the Chargers and Cowboys appeared to have all the elements required to be a high-scoring, touchdown-laden affair: Two of the best offenses in the league, a former coordinator facing his old team and a struggling Chargers secondary. Instead, it was another Chargers loss that came down to the final moments. All of their games have been decided by 7 points or less this season.

Dak Prescott scored his first rushing touchdown since Week 8 of 2022 on Monday night, improving the Cowboys' record to 21-4 when he scores a rushing touchdown.

Next Gen stat of the game: Prescott reached his two fastest speeds (18.65 mph) of the season on back-to-back runs in the first quarter, including his 18-yard touchdown run (18.06 mph).
